Amble along the waterfront and listen to the fisherman’s boats clinking in the harbour, then venture to McCaig’s Tower. This striking structure is perched on Battery Hill overlooking Oban and offers hazy views across to the islands of Kerrera, Lismore, and Mull. Constructed from local Bonawe granite, this historic tower hides a relaxing community garden inside – the perfect place to catch your breath before discovering the peaty delights of Oban Distillery.
Established in 1794 by two brothers from the Hebrides Islands, Oban Distillery is situated in the heart of the town and holds the title of one of Scotland’s smallest and oldest distilleries. Your first stop of the day is the Leault Farm Sheepdog Demonstration. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by shepherd, Neil, and his pack of exceptionally trained collies. Watch in awe as these magnificent dogs follow precise whistle commands and use their instinct to gracefully guide the resident sheep. After the display, enjoy cuddles with the furry workers and try your hand at bottle-feeding the sheep.
Next, glide alongside purple heather-capped hills and dramatic valleys en route to the Falls of Bruar hike near Pitlochry. Ascend the lush woodland trail surrounded by soaring Douglas fir trees until you reach the falls. This spot was famously visited by Robert Burns in 1787 and inspired his poem ‘Humble Petition of the Bruar Water’.
